The Dutch are the tallest people?

    Posted on Friday, 09.15.06

One of the most popular news today at Yahoo is this article on the Dutch being the tallest people in the world. The article says an average Dutchman stands 6 foot tall, while an average Dutch woman stands 5 foot 7. Compare that to the average american man, who stands 5 foot 9 1/2, or an average women, who stands 5 foot 4. The article states that an average American had been the tallest in the world for 200 years, when Dutch overtook Amercans during the 1950s and never looked back.

The article also says Dutch airlines used to have an agreement with the Dutch Tall People’s club to give tall people seating in spacious front seats, but then other people complained and had to cancel the deal.

Of the 16 million Dutch people, the number of men who are 6-3 or taller, or women 5-11 or taller are estimated to be 800,000.

The increase in average height has been slowing down recently, with countries in Scandinavia maxing out at around 6 feet.

How tall do you think we will be in about a hundred years?
    Just a food for thought.

Flying with Dignity. Airline Seats for Tall People.

    Posted on Saturday, 09.2.06

seatmap.gifFor most of you who have already been flying, you’ve probably used SeatGuru.com by now. It provides you with detailed maps of airline seat layouts and how much legroom they offer. Even if you don’t want to change your airlines (mileage card, etc), it may be a good idea to check it out before you go on your next flight.

If you have some more time to check around airline services, you can visit AirlineQuality.com for more general customer satisfaction forums. They also offer seat pitch guide.

If you think you really can’t take people in front of you taking away your legroom, there’s a product called the Knee Defender($14.95 + S&H), which stops people from reclining their seats. Has anyone use this product? What did you think about it?

    Cars for tall people.

    Posted on Saturday, 09.2.06

hondaelement160.jpgDid you know an average car is designed for a person between 5′5″ and 6′0″? If you are not in this category, then you have probably already experienced all of the following annoyances:
    1) Head bumping.
    2) Leg Cramping.
    3) Knee Jamming.

However, once in a while, the carmakers wise up and engineer some ingenious marvels into their models, in the form of higher rooflines and longer seat track, enabling an average tall person to ride comfortably in their vehicles. (Just joking..) Auto experts at Edmunds.com pick out which 10 cars are best suited for tall people.

Here are some threads on tall people & cars:

How to dress to look shorter

    Posted on Friday, 09.1.06

The Law of Average says what went up must come down. What’s expensive becomes cheap. In the same sense, obviously who’s tall must wear short-looking clothes. Besides describing how to dress like Krusty the Clown, where did these guys get the idea that we want to look shorter? Here’s a funny tip on how to dress to look shorter (eHow.com):

    1) Try wearing a longer top to help visually shorten your legs.
    2) Wear pants with cuffs to ground and truncate your legs.
    3) Choose horizontal stripes over vertical ones; avoid pinstripes, for example, which will elongate your figure.
    4) Mix light and dark shades. Pairing a dark shirt with light pants, or vice versa, will shorten your body.
    5) Put on flat, rather than heeled, shoes.
Pick clothes that have larger details ‘ wide lapels, buttons and other features. Delicate details such as small collars will make the body look large by contrast.

The real advice? Try doing the opposite. Wear right-sized top. Don’t have cuffs on your pants. Choose vertical stripes (power suit). This will make you look nicely dressed.
